What goes on at the Genesis House?
The work-ordered day
The work of the clubhouse is performed by three units:
The Clerical Unit consists of members who work on record keeping, computer work, filing, letter writing and advocacy, photocopying, a monthly newsletter, attendance, statistics, telephone/secretarial tasks, purchase requisitioning, clubhouse cash-funds monitoring, and financial record-keeping
The Butterfly Cafe is responsible for operating & maintaining the clubhouse kitchen, dining room & snack shop. Members participate in monthly menu planning, daily meal preparation, grocery inventory, grocery shopping and dining room maintenance. In addition, members organize & operate a self supporting snack shop.
The Employment and Administration Unit is responsible for assisting with member employment and overall clubhouse management. This unit supports the Transitional Employment program and also fosters independent employment opportunities. Leadership opportunities, advocacy events, and clubhouse networking are other responsibilities handled by the EAU.
Transitional Employment Program
Genesis House provides a Transitional Employment (TE) program in which members have the opportunity to work part time at community businesses for competitive wages. The TE program offers a variety of entry level positions available to members on a temporary basis who wish to build work experience, refine work habits, regain self-confidence, earn money and increase job references. Genesis House staff and members provide training and coverage options to employers, guaranteeing perfect attendance!
The Social Program
Genesis House also offers an evening social program in which members have the opportunity to meet and socialize. These weekly social events, planned by the members, vary from week to week and can include card games, trips to the shopping mall, picnics, eating out, movies and other activities that members choose.
