Claudia - “Genesis House has opened a lot of opportunities for me and has given me confidence, structure and self-esteem.  It has really changed my life.”

What is a Clubhouse?

The emergence of Clubhouses around the world demonstrates that people with mental illness can successfully participate in society through education, employment and other social activities.

ICCD Clubhouses offer people who have mental illness hope and opportunities to achieve their full human potential.  They provide:

  • A place where people with serious mental illness – who are known as “members” – participate in their own recovery process by working and socializing together in a safe and welcoming environment.
  • An organization that operates on proven standards coordinated by ICCD and effective in over 300 Clubhouses worldwide since 1989.
  • A community-based approach that compliments available psychiatric treatment.

The personal stories of members and their families and an increasing body of research provide evidence that Clubhouses provide a holistic, inspiring and cost-effective solution for people living with mental illness.

More about Genesis House:

What does a day at the Clubhouse look like?

We see an average of 28 members per day who come to volunteer their time and skills in order to run all of the Clubhouse operations.

While at the Clubhouse, members volunteer their time and talents in one of two work units:

The Business Unit supports the Clubhouse through a variety of clerical, employment, and coordination tasks.  These include daily attendance records, compiling statistics, billing, job searching, submitting paystub records to social security, coordinating the orientation and newsletter efforts, and more.

The Dine and Dollar Cafe supports the Clubhouse by preparing daily meals, running a snack shop, menu planning, maintenance, creating wellness initiatives, processing Clubhouse finances, and much more.

Members at Work: There are 6 placements for members to work in the Transitional Employment Program, and about 30% of Clubhouse members are employed.  This is nearly triple the national percentage for people with mental illness who are working.

Genesis House was founded in December of 1993 in Howell, Michigan, as a program of Livingston County Community Mental Health.  Then Genesis House relocated to the Fowlerville area in 1999, and has been there ever since.  Genesis House remains commited in helping people on their road to recovery.   There are currently 60 active members and nearly 200 alumni members.
